Dark Moon or New Moon (NM): The moon's un-illuminated side is facing the Earth. The
moon is not visible (except during a solar eclipse).
Waxing Crescent Moon : Right 1–49% visible. "Waxing" means growing and refers to the size of the illuminated part of the moon that is increasing.
First Quarter Moon (FQ): Right 50% visible. One-half of the moon appears to be illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the moon's disk that is illuminated is increasing.
Waxing gibbous moon:
Right 51–99% visible. More than half
of the Moon appears illuminated, with more and more becoming illuminated on
successive days.
Full Moon (FM): Fully visible. The moon's illuminated side is facing the Earth. The moon
appears to be completely illuminated by direct sunlight.
Waning gibbous moon: Left 51–99% visible.
More than half of the Moon appears
illuminated, with less and less becoming illuminated on successive days.
Third Quarter Moon or Last Quarter Moon (LQ):
Left 50% visible. One-half of the moon
appears to be illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the moon's disk
that is illuminated is decreasing.
Waning crescent moon: Left 1–49% visible. "Waning" means shrinking and refers to the size of the illuminated part of the moon that is decreasing.
