Welcome to the original and leading Isle of Wight Weather Station Network, weather portal and website, now in it's tenth year. Here, you can find details of past and present weather conditions, forecasts, climate and trends to be found whilst living or holidaying on the Isle of Wight. We have weather data and details from Newport, Bleakdown, Freshwater Lifeboat Station, Brighstone, Central Newport, Sandown, Ryde, Cowes, St Catherine's Point, Brighstone and our newest weather station installed at Niton. With the exceptions of routine back up and maintenance to our data systems, Isleofwightweather is on line 24 hours a day giving you the information you need when you need it. Unlike other 'professional' weather centers, we spread our network of weather data over six different websites on five different servers to help reduce downtime and outages. During extreme weather conditions, we update our data more frequently. We have a two day detailed Isle of Wight weather forecast, which is proving to be very accurate, which is updated every evening with our data and can be seen here. Compare the weather at Newport, Godshill, Brighstone and Freshwater here. See the weather on your mobile phone or hand held device from any of our locations too. or if you have an iPhone.
Our weather recording equipment includes a Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus with FARS and three Davis Vantage Pro2 Automatic weather stations. We now use a Davis WeatherLinkIP data logger on one of our consoles. This allows the uploading of data to a Weather Website without the need for a PC. This data can be viewed here. Our lightning detection system uses a Boltek Storm Tracker PCI lightning detector, and Astrogenic Systems NexStorm 1.54 software, allowing us to plot real time storm details, which are updated every minute there is activity. Our sferic information can now be seen here. This is the most popular thunderstorm detection and information website in the South of England. Join our unique TSentry Thunderstorm Alert Notification Service here.
We are now able to show our own live weather details from Newport, Bleakdown Freshwater and Brighstone, with data uploaded every 5 seconds. Watch as weather events unfold right before your eyes. We are using Weather Display Live V6.04 and MesoMap V1.03 software for this feature which can be seen here. Also a second Isle of Wight weather web cam has now been added, which can be seen here. We are currently experimenting with a more basic display using Cumulus software.
After a failure of our original equipment, we have now updated our APT Satellite receiving equipment to include a Holger Eckardt R2ZX weather satellite receiver with a Dartcom quadrifilar helix antenna, enabling us to receive images from the NOAA series of weather satellites again, this will soon be available here. satellite images of the Isle of Wight.

The Isle of Wight is a small Island, with an approximate area of 150 square miles, but despite the relatively small area, the weather can vary quite dramatically from one place to another, as can be seen by the data shown above. Factors which contribute to such variance include maritime and geographical influences.
If you are looking for a warm, sunny place to stay for a holiday, you could not find a much better place to come. The Isle of Wight has one of the best records for sunshine in the South of England. The tourist hot spots are to be found on the southeast side of the Island. Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor are the three holiday spots with the most sunshine, averaging 5 hours per day, with peaks of up to 8 hours per day during the summer months. Temperatures do vary between inland and coastal towns, although not by more than a couple of degrees.
One local theory is that bad weather coming up the English Channel from the west is split by the Needles, and the worse weather carries on to Lymington, Southampton, Portsmouth and then along the remainder of the south coast, with the better weather coming over the Isle of Wight, but it has to be said, that this might not have any scientific proof!
October 1987 saw the worse storms and winds the Island has ever seen, with recorded gusts of over 100 mph. This caused millions of pounds worth of damage to properties and possessions, and changed the face of the countryside in places for ever. Typically the worst winds are reported along the south west coast between St. Catherine's Point and the Needles Lighthouses. These winds are usually the tail ends of Atlantic Storms, and provide excellent conditions for wind surfing, surfing and hang gliding.
Towards the southern most point of the Isle of Wight, Chale and Blackgang are places that always seems to be covered in fog, usually through the spring, and early summer months. Towns on the coasts are also prone to sea fog, but this fog burns off quickly once the sun rises. The ferries and hovercraft to the Island are very rarely cancelled due to visibility problems, but rough seas do cause the odd cancellation, but don't worry, this does not last too long.
If you would like us to add your data, or need help with your weather station or weather project, please drop us a line. We now sell weather stations and equipment at mainland prices, but with Island Service, and would be glad to offer you a hand in selecting the equipment most suitable for your needs, be it for agricultural, educational, commercial or personal use.
